Eye Donation Process

Donor Identification
Typically the donor has recently passed away and the family or next of kin will be asked what the donor's wishes are.

An Organ donor should discuss their wishes with family members and keep a written, signed document in their wallet. Driver's licenses are not the best way of saving this information. Many states have Donor Registries that confirm the consent of the donor.

Eye Recovery
The person coordinating the donation will consider recent family medical history.

Typically, the eye bank technicians have approximately 12 hours to process and preserve the cornea before it can no longer be used. The transplant must occur within 2 weeks of this process.
