Why donate eyes or corneas?
The need for eye/cornea donations is still much greater than what is currently being donated. Currently, there are 400 donors each year in the state of Utah.
Reasons that someone may need your eye or cornea donation are:
- Trauma patients who damage the cornea
- Chemical burns to the eye
- Kerataconus Degenerative Disorder
- Fuch's Dystrophy
- Herpetic viruses
- Loss of normal cornea function
Often the donation bank will inform the family that the donation to a new recipient has been completed. The gift of sight to someone who may otherwise be blind is described by families as a gift of meaning on behalf of their family.
